Who is Doxepin topical for ?
Doxepin cream can be used short term (up to 8 days) in adults
that suffer from itchy skin caused by eczema or dermatitis. |

When should I be careful taking Doxepin topical ?
Before using doxepin cream,
- tell your doctor if you are allergic to doxepin cream, oral
doxepin or any other prescription or non-prescription drugs.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and
nonprescription drugs you are taking or have taken within the
last 2 weeks, especially antihistamines; anticoagulants [warfarin
(Coumadin)]; cimetidine (Tagamet); tricyclic antidepressants [clompiramine
(Anafranil), amitriptyline (Elavil), doxepin, (Sinequan),
imipramine (Tofranil), protriptyline (Vivactil), trimipramine (Surmontil),
nortriptyline (Pamelor), desipramine (Norpramin)]; SSRI
antidepressants [fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft),
paroxetine (Paxil), or citalopram (Celexa)]; MAO inhibitors [phenelzine
(Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate)]; medication for high blood
pressure, irregular heartbeat, seizures, Parkinson's disease,
diabetes, asthma, colds, or allergies; methylphenidate (Ritalin);
muscle relaxants; anti-psychotics; oral contraceptives;
sedatives; sleeping pills; thyroid medications; tranquilizers;
and vitamins.
- tell your doctor if you have or have ever had glaucoma, an
enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, diabetes, seizures, an
overactive thyroid gland, or liver, kidney, or heart disease.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become
pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while
taking this drug, call your doctor immediately.
- if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell
the doctor or dentist that you are using doxepin cream.
- you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not
drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug
affects you.
- remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by
this drug.

Side Effects
Side effects from doxepin cream can occur; tell your doctor if
any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- drowsiness
- dry mouth or lips
- headache
- increased thirst
- weakness or tiredness
- upset stomach
- burning and/or stinging at the site of application
- rash
- dryness or tightness of skin
- swelling of legs
- irritations, tingling, scaling or cracking of skin
- worsening of eczema
- emotional changes
- taste changes
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor
immediately:
- blurred vision
- irregular heartbeat
- difficulty urinating
- slow or difficult speech
