Who is Folic Acid for ?

Folic acid is used to treat or prevent folic acid deficiency. It is a B complex vitamin needed by the body to manufacture red blood cells. A deficiency of this vitamin causes certain types of anemia (low red blood cell count). this medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

 

When should I be careful taking Folic Acid ?

Before taking folic acid,

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to folic acid or any other drugs.
  • tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially phenytoin (Dilantin) and vitamins.
  • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking folic acid, call your doctor.
 

Side Effects

Although side effects from folic acid are not common, they can occur. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • skin rash
  • itching
  • redness
  • difficulty breathing (rarely)
