Who is Gatifloxacin Ophthalmic for ?

Gatifloxacin ophthalmic (eyedrops) is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections of the eye.

 
How does it work ?

Gatifloxacin eyedrops belongs to a class of medications called quinolone antibiotics. It works by killing bacterial cells that cause the eye infection.

 

When should I be careful taking Gatifloxacin Ophthalmic ?

Before using gatifloxacin eyedrops,

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to gatifloxacin or any other medications, especially other quinolone antibiotics including sparfloxacin (Zagam), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), enoxacin (Penetrex), levofloxacin (Levaquin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ofloxacin (Floxin), cinoxacin (Cinobac), moxifloxacin (Avelox), and nalidixic acid (NegGram).
  • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • try to avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the eye, fingers or any other source. The applicator tip should be kept clean.
  • plan to not wear contact lenses while treating your eye infection with gatifloxacin.
 

Gatifloxacin Ophthalmic Side Effects

Although side effects from gatifloxacin are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of the following symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • Stinging, burning, irritation, or discomfort in the eye after inserting the drops
  • Watery eyes
  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye pain
  • Discharge from the eye
  • Headache
