Who is Hyzaar for ?
The combination of losartan and
hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. This
medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor
or pharmacist for more information. |
|
|
|
How does it work ?
This combination medication contains losartan,
an angiotensin II receptor blocker (or ARB), and hydrochlorothiazide,
a diuretic. The losartan component helps lower blood pressure by
blocking angiotensin II, a hormone in the body that causes blood
vessels to constrict or narrow. This narrowing of blood vessels due
to angiotensin II hormone is an important component of high blood
pressure. Blocking the hormone causes vessels to relax or dilate,
and thus losartan helps reduce blood pressure. The
hydrochlorothiazide component causes the kidneys to get rid of
unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine. |
