Who is Miacalcin Nasal Spray for ?

Calcitonin salmon nasal spray is a hormone product. It contains the human hormone calcitonin, which also is found in salmon. It is used to treat osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) in women who have been in menopause for more than 5 years. It usually is only used by women who do not want to use or cannot use estrogen products. Women using calcitonin salmon for osteoporosis should also take a calcium and vitamin D supplement. this medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

 
How does it work ?

Calcitonin increases bone density, or thickness by increasing calcitonin levels in the body. Calcitonin directly inhibits the breakdown of bone.

 

When should I be careful taking Miacalcin Nasal Spray ?

Before using calcitonin salmon,

  • tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to calcitonin salmon or any other drugs. Your doctor may do a skin test before you start calcitonin salmon to make sure you do not have an allergic reaction to it.
  • tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, including vitamins.
  • tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while using calcitonin salmon, call your doctor.
 

Side Effects

Although side effects from calcitonin salmon are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • upset stomach
  • diarrhea
  • flushing
  • flu-like symptoms
  • muscle aches
  • back pain
  • fever
  • tiredness

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • nose symptoms such as crusts, dryness, redness, swelling, sores, tenderness, or bleeding
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of nose or throat
  • rash
