CAUSES |

In
most cases, the cause of breast cancer is unknown. However, the
following risk factors have been identified:

Family history. If you have a sister,
mother or daughter with breast cancer your risk of developing it
is also increased. |

A
personal history of breast cancer carries a risk of the disease
recurring. |

Early
start of menstrual cycle. |
| • |
Late
menopause. |
| • |
First
pregnancy after the age of 30. |
| • |
Nulliparity (never having carried a pregnancy). |
| • |
Genetic tendency. A small percentage of breast cancers (5
percent) develop due to genetic tendency |
| • |
Ongoing studies are looking at the effect of a diet low in fat,
high in fruit and vegetable intake on reducing the risk of
developing breast cancer. |
