EPILEPSY CAUSES

Given the right circumstances, anyone can have an epileptic seizure. However, most people are not susceptible. In those who are susceptible, the cause is not known in two thirds of cases.

Epilepsy tends to run in families, indicating a genetic predisposition. However, genetics accounts for only a small number of cases. In some instances epilepsy is caused by an underlying brain lesion or disease.

Known causes of epilepsy include:

Stroke.
Vascular malformation.
Tumour.
Alcohol abuse.
Drugs.
Head injury.
Infections such as febrile convulsions in children, encephalitis and meningitis. Some patients may continue to have seizures after the infection has cleared because of residual damage.
