HIV DIAGNOSIS

A blood test is taken to look for HIV antibodies (the proteins produced by the body to fight infection). There are two types of antibody tests currently available in Ireland – ELISA and Western Blot. HIV has also be detected from saliva and urine samples.

In all cases, counselling is performed prior to testing to prepare the person for any eventuality.
