MESOTHELIOMA CAUSES |
|
|
The main causes of Mesothelioma is
normally attributed to asbestos. Even exposure at low levels to very
small fibers and dust particles can lead to mesothelioma cancer.
Tracing a history of patients suffering from mesothelioma, it will
usually be found that there has been some form of exposure to
asbestos.
This will not necessarily have been a direct exposure to asbestos.
Mesothelioma has been contracted by family members of those who have
worked in an asbestos environment. This is normally deemed to have
caused the mesothelioma due to asbestos in the clothes or hair of
the worker being brought into the home environment, where other
family members are then exposed.
Work environments which would be high risk for exposure would
include:-
Manufacturers of asbestos products, such as insulation, roofing, and
building materials
Construction contractors
Mines
Shipyards
Steel mills
Railroads
Oil refineries
Jobs which would be considered the highest risk would include:-
Auto mechanics
Boilermakers
Bricklayers
Building Inspectors
Carpenters
Electricians
Furnace workers
Glazers
Insulators
Labourers
Maintenance workers
Mariners
Machinery operators
Painters
Plasterers
Plumbers
Roofers
Welders
These lists are not exhaustive, and should be just considered as
illustrations of the type of environment or occupation which would
be considered hazardous in years gone by, and susceptible to risk
for mesothelioma.
Because mesothelioma affects the lungs, smokers will be at greater
risk than non-smokers, but there has been no conclusive evidence
linking smoking to mesothelioma without the patient also having a
link to asbestos. |
